McIntyre Hills Proposed Wilderness

Location

  • McIntyre Hills is a Royal Gorge Bureau of Land Management Resource Area in the Arkansas River Canyon 15 miles west of Canon City.
  • It lies within Fremont County and forms the south side of the Arkansas River Canyon between Parkdale and Texas Creek.
  • Access McIntyre Hills from the east side via Parkdale and Copper Gulch, CR 28. Take Hwy 50 to Parkdale. Turn south on Fremont 28, Copper Gulch Road. At about 5.5 miles, past the private ranch, it is possible to bushwhack into the area. Access the area from the north via Hwy 50. Bushwhack south into the area from Spikebuck, Five Points, or Pinnacle Rock recreation areas, all west of Parkdale. There are not trails, and the area is very rough and steep.

Wilderness Qualities

  • McIntyre is remote with few access points. Backcountry challenge awaits the visitor who can bushwhack as there are few if any trails.
  • The area provides wildlife connections to Table Mountain and Grape Creek.

Natural Features

  • The steep slopes of McIntyre Hills, ranging in elevation from 5,900 ft. to 8,100 ft., abuts the Arkansas River and gradually drop into somewhat lower areas along Cooper Gulch on the southeast and Thomas Gulch on the west. The area is very arid with only seasonal streams.
  • Wildlife in the area include bighorn sheep, black bear, mountain lion, mule deer, and raptors, including golden eagles and prairie falcons. Bald eagle winter in McIntyre Hills.
  • Vegetation includes pinon-juniper woodlands, semi-desert shrubland, and Ponderosa pine.rian corridor along the Arkansas River and East Gulch.
