Events
Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time
The Southern Colorado premiere of a film from the Aldo
Leopold Foundation, the US Forest Service, and the Center
for Humans and Nature.
Aldo Leopold was one of the fathers of the science of
ecology and the American Wilderness system. This
highly-acclaimed new film explores Leopold’s life and
legacy, provocatively examining his thinking, renewing his
idea of a land ethic for a population facing 21st century
ecological challenges. Beautifully photographed and edited,
the film illustrates Leopold’s continuing influence on
current scientific and environmental projects around the
country and the world that connect people and the land.

Outings
Saturday, February 18 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Table Mountain Proposed Wilderness Day Hike
Located on the north side of the Arkansas River canyon west
of Royal Gorge, Table Mountain is one of the roadless BLM
areas adjacent to the section of the Arkansas canyon to be
impacted by the Christo "Over the River Project." Learn
about impacts which the project may have on wildlife and the
human environment, as well as wilderness possibilities for
the area and the region. Join us for this moderately
strenuous on-and-off-trail hike of up to seven miles and
about 1,000 feet in elevation gain to explore a scenic
canyon, and possibly see bighorn sheep along the way. Some
easy rock scrambling is involved. Well-behaved, leashed dogs
allowed. The hike is sponsored by Pikes Peak Group Sierra
Club, Wild Connections, and Central Colorado Wilderness
Coalition. For more information and to register, contact John
Stansfield, 303-660-5849 or e-mail jorcstan@juno.com
by 5 PM, February 17.
Saturday, February 25 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Pikes Peak Snowshoe
This will be a moderate 3-4 mile snowshoe trip to Horsethief
Park on the west side of Pikes Peak. This will be an
all-day trip with emphasis on learning and practicing basic
snowshoe techniques while enjoying the great out-of-doors in
one of our protected National Forests. Bring lunch, water,
and clothing suitable for the weather conditions.
Participants will have to own or rent snowshoes and ski
poles, plus suitable footwear. If conditions warrant, the
hike may be changed to a different location with better or
more accessible snow. For more information or to sign up,
call Jim Lockhart at 385-0045.
Saturday, March 17 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Browns Canyon Proposed Wilderness Day Hike
Hike the newly-constructed BLM trail from Ruby Mountain
amidst canyons and rock spires just east of the Arkansas
River. This moderate trip will cover about six miles on
gently sloping, lower elevation terrain, gaining less than
1,000 feet in elevation. Participants will learn the latest
about the campaign to permanently protect the BLM Wilderness
Study Area and adjacent Forest Service roadless lands. The
hike is sponsored by Pikes Peak Group Sierra Club, Wild
Connections, and Central Colorado Wilderness Coalition. For
more information and to register, contact John
Stansfield, 303-660-5849 or e-mail jorcstan@juno.com
